Broader region

Benguerra Island is a tropical paradise located in the Bazaruto Archipelago of Mozambique. It has a blend of idyllic beaches, vibrant marine life, and rich cultural experiences.

WHY

Benguerra Island is the perfect setting for an intimate, relaxation and sunbathing getaway.

The turquoise waters and rich marine life makes for an exciting diving and snorkelling experience. The freshwater lakes, forests and sand dunes offers a diverse range of landscapes and habitats to explore. The local Benguerra Island community is a signature activity to embrace. Drive through many villages and get to know the some of the members. Learn about the local history and their way of life.

This creates a unique blend of natural beauty, adventure, and cultural experiences

Highlights:

  • Diverse Marine Life: Benguerra Island is located within the Bazaruto Marine National Park. You will see the protected marine species such as the dugong, dolphin, and several species of turtles making the coral reefs an excellent spot for snorkelling and diving excursions.
  • Traditional Dhow Safaris: Experience the turquoise waters on a traditional dhow (type of sailboat) safari. Sail around the archipelago and enjoy the sunset.
  • Luxury Accommodation: Benguerra Island is home to several luxury lodges and resorts.

WHEN

Benguerra Island offers a tropical paradise setting. which also means it has two seasons, the dry season (April to October) and the hot season (November to March)

The dry season sees cooler temperatures and less humidity, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). It's a great time for diving and snorkelling as the water visibility is often better.

The hot season is more humid daytime temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F) and brief but heavy afternoon showers.

Despite being the wet season, it's a fantastic time for birdwatching as many migratory birds are present on the island. However, the increased humidity and possibility of cyclones during these months (especially January to March) might not be ideal for every traveller.

Diving & Marine Life:

  • Best Visibility: April to September offers the best underwater visibility for divers.
  • Whale Watching: Humpback whales migrate through the waters between June and October.
  • Turtle Nesting: Green and loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches between November and February.
  • Peak Tourist Season: July and August. It is particularly popular due to school holidays, so you may encounter more visitors during this period

WHERE

Benguerra Island is the second-largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago. Located off the southeastern coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean.

Your journey will typically start by flying into Mozambique's capital, Maputo (Maputo International Airport, MPM ) or directly to Vilankulo Airport (VNX) if there are direct flights available.

By Air: The quickest way to get from Vilankulo to Benguerra Island is by a short helicopter or light aircraft transfer. This scenic trip usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes, offering a spectacular aerial view of the turquoise waters and the islands.

By Boat: Alternatively, you can opt for a boat transfer, which can be a picturesque and more leisurely way to reach the island. This trip can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the type of boat and weather conditions.

This Travel Firm is Ready for You!
We have completed the preliminary reservations with this amazing travel firm. Thank God they exist! We would never have been able to figure out how to put the pieces of our trip to AFRICA together without them. They are patient, caring, detailed, and responsive to communications…something you expect, but do not always receive when service is involved. Connect with them via email if you are even thinking about going to Africa. Cheers!

First time to Cape Town
We are a group of ten friends traveling together to Cape Town for the first time. Safari.com was our top choice for travel agents. Leché and Tracy were incredibly helpful and prompt with our questions and bookings. The trip to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve was fantastic, and everything went off without a hitch. We highly recommend Safari.com for your safari plans!
